| Overview of position |
Our client as a component of the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS) In line with the UN’s strategic priorities, our client works across the humanitarian-development-peace nexus, supporting emergency response, enabling stabilization, and fostering resilience. Its partnerships with donors, UN agencies, national authorities, the African Union Mission in Somalia and implementing organizations are crucial to delivering impactful and sustainable mine action interventions. Under the direct supervision of the Operations and Quality Assurance Officer, the Senior Operations Assistant (Interpreter) - will play a critical role in our client’s efforts to reduce the threat posed by IEDs. He/she will work closely with the client Operations and Quality Assurance Officers and Instructors and will support the implementation of the quarterly training plan for AUSSOM and SSF, pre-deployment training (PDT) inclusive of delivering a Train of Trainers (ToT) package and mentoring of host countries’ Pre-deployment Training (PDT) delivery. The Senior Operations Assistant (Interpreter), while based in Mogadishu, will be required to travel to each of the regional/sector hubs, FOBs or any other temporarily manned locations by AUSSOM and SSF as required and tasked by our client. |
| Role objectives |
Support Development and Delivery of Training: Participate in the development of training materials, preparation of lessons and exercises. Instructional Support: Assist in the delivery of lessons and exercises on instructional techniques as part of our client training and mentoring team. Translation and interpretation: Support the delivery of training through translation and preparation of training materials, lesson plans and related documentation from English to Somali language.
Mentorship: Contribute to the mentorship of SSF instructors throughout training and practical exercises through provision of interpretation, oversight and guidance during theoretical lessons and field-based activities. |
| Project reporting |
Reporting – Support the Instructors and Mentors in collecting training-related data for reporting by maintaining up-to-date information on the number of personnel trained and the types of training.
Additional Duties: Undertake other tasks as directed by the client Instructor(s). |
| Key competencies |
Minimum 5 years of relevant experience with secondary education. Relevant experience is defined as experience in delivering training and/or translating during lessons and exercises with Somali Security Forces, and experience in humanitarian mine action-related activities. Minimum of 2 years of experience with a bachelor’s degree. Relevant experience in training delivery and/or translation during lessons and exercises with Somali Security Forces, and experience in humanitarian mine action-related activities Previous work experience in a demanding operational environment, a multi-cultural context and harsh living conditions. A minimum of 2 years’ experience in supporting humanitarian mine action, explosive ordnance disposal (EOD), counter-IED, or explosive threat mitigation programmes is required. Experience working with national mine action authorities, military, police, or international organizations involved in mine action is required. Experience in Translation and interpretation is required.
Experience working with UN agencies, international NGOs, government institutions, or security sector organizations is an advantage. |
