Overview of position

Afghanistan faces significant natural hazard risks, including earthquakes, floods, droughts, landslides, sandstorms, and avalanches. These recurrent events are compounded by extreme winter conditions, particularly in mountainous areas that make up around 63% of the country. Many rural households lack adequate protection, and limited capacity within government institutions further exacerbates the vulnerabilities of affected or displaced families.

 

In alignment with its "Disaster Risk Management and Disaster Risk Reduction Framework," our client Afghanistan implements DRR activities aimed at building the resilience of disaster-prone communities. These efforts focus on enhancing preparedness and response capacities at the national, provincial, and community levels, empowering communities to better anticipate and respond to potential hazards. Under the direct supervision of the Program Officer (DRR), the Project Assistant (Translation & Communication Support) will assist in the implementation of project activities by providing translation and interpretation assistance during training, meetings, and daily office operations. The incumbent will also assist with communication and coordination with various stakeholders in Dari, Pashto, Turkish and English.

Role objectives

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

  • Assist in arranging meetings with local authorities, collect meeting minutes and translate them into local languages as needed.

  • Provide translation of training materials, official documents, correspondence, and reports between Dari, Pashto, Turkish, and English.

  • Provide interpretation support during training, workshops, meetings, and other project-related events.

  • Support the organization and general assistance in the implementation of capacity building activities, including logistical and administrative arrangements.

  • Assist with communication and follow-up with project stakeholders, government counterparts, and partner organizations in all required languages.

  • Maintain a database of translated documents and official communication with local authorities in both digital and hard copies.

  • Assist in the preparation, formatting, and proofreading of project reports and presentations.

  • Handle information and documents with confidentiality and discretion.

  • Perform other duties as may be assigned by the supervisor.

    Required Qualifications and Experience

 Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Translation, Linguistics, Social Sciences, or a related field from an accredited academic institution with one year of relevant experience.

   Or 

  • High school diploma with three years of relevant experience

 Experience:

  • Previous experience in translation, interpretation, or administrative support, preferably in an international or capacity building context.

 Skills:

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.

  • The ability to work effectively with diverse groups of people is also essential.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other program-relevant applications.

 Languages:

  • For all applicants, fluency in English is required (oral and written).

  • Fluency in Dari, Pashto, and Turkish is required.
